Auto-Translate Guide

Follow this comprehensive guide to automatically translate your novels using OpenNovel's advanced auto-translate feature. This process helps you efficiently translate entire novels with minimal manual effort.

What is Auto-Translate?

Auto-translate is an advanced feature that automatically translates entire novels for you. It includes intelligent glossary generation, background processing, and quality review tools to ensure high-quality translations with minimal manual effort.
You can also export the translated novel as an ePub file for offline reading or use on your eReader.
1️⃣

Import a Novel

Before starting the auto-translation process, you need to import a novel into OpenNovel. You have two main options:

🌐 Option 1: Bulk Import from Supported Website

Use OpenNovel's bulk import feature to automatically grab chapters from supported raw novel websites. This method lets you import multiple chapters at once directly from the source.
→ Learn about bulk import

📚 Option 2: Import an ePub File

Upload an existing ePub file to OpenNovel using the "Import EPUB" button. If you don't have an ePub yet, you can use the web2epub extension to package novels from raw websites into ePub format, then upload them to OpenNovel.
→ Learn about ePub import
Once your novel is imported, go to the novel page in OpenNovel and click the "Auto-Translate" button.

2️⃣

Select Parts to Translate

Choose which chapters in your novel you want to translate.
You can use the "Select Range" button to choose a specific subset of chapters for translation.
💡 Pro Tip:
We recommend starting with a smaller batch (like 5-10 chapters) for your first auto-translate job to get familiar with the process before translating hundreds of chapters.
3️⃣

Glossary Generation

OpenNovel's AI will automatically analyze your selected chapters and generate a comprehensive glossary, including:
  • Character Names: Protagonists, antagonists, and supporting characters
  • Terminology: Cultivation terms, magic systems, technical jargon, etc.
  • Organizations: Guilds, sects, companies, etc.
  • Special Items and Skills: Weapons, artifacts, skills, etc.
4️⃣

Review Glossary

Review and refine the AI-generated glossary. This is a crucial step for maintaining consistency. You can customize how you want characters and terms to be translated, and also set character genders explicitly for consistent translation.
You can also import pre-made glossary packs, such as the cultivation terms glossary pack, to keep terminology consistent in cultivation novels.
⚠️ Important:
Take time to review the glossary carefully, as it will be applied throughout the entire translation. Any mistakes here will require retranslating the affected chapters.
5️⃣

Translate Chapters in Background

Once you approve the glossary, the translation process begins automatically in the background. This may take a while depending on how many chapters you're translating. Feel free to navigate away from the page and return anytime to check the translation progress.
6️⃣

Review Translated Chapters

We'll show you the translation status of all selected chapters. Any failed translations will be highlighted at the top. You can fix failed translations by clicking on them and regenerating or boosting the chapter.
Click "Finish and Export to ePub" to complete the auto-translate process.
7️⃣

Export EPUB

🎉 Congratulations!
You've successfully completed the auto-translate process! Your ePub file is ready for reading.

FAQ

⏱️ How long does auto-translate take?

Translation time depends on the number of chapters and their length. Generally, expect about 2 minutes per chapter. A 100-chapter novel typically takes 3-4 hours to complete. The process runs in the background, so you can do other things (or sleep) while it works.

❌ What if some chapters fail to translate?

Failed translations are highlighted at the top of your chapter list in the translation review stage. You can click on failed chapters to regenerate them or use the "boost" feature.

🏃 Can I leave the page during the auto-translate process?

Yes! You can navigate away from the page at any time and return later to check progress. The translation continues in the background.

💰 How much does auto-translate cost?

Auto-translate is available on Hobby plans and above. Bookworm users are granted 1000 credits per month for auto-translate, and Hobby users can purchase credits to auto-translate as an add-on.
